How to Tell Google, Bing and Yahoo that Your Website Exists

You have a website, but Google, Bing and Yahoo don’t seem to be aware that your site exists. What are you going to do about it? After DeCarlo Studios builds and launches a website for our clients, we register the site with Google, Bing and Yahoo. This is a simple process and here is what you should do to register your website.

How to Submit a Website to Google

Here is a link that you can use to add your website URL to Google. It is a simple data form into which you copy and paste your complete web address. Submission of your website to Google is a free service and offers no guarantee of indexing. It isn't necessary to add subdomains – just the root main website address. The bots will find the subdomains, although an updated sitemap may speed up the process once it is added. A simple way to make sure that you put in the correct address is to open a web browser and go to your website's home page. Copy the entire address. You will then paste that address into the Google site submission window.

Bing and Yahoo have joined together and allow you one submission for both search engines. It is also a simple form just like Google’s URL submission form. Again, just like above, a simple way to make sure that you put in the correct address is to open a web browser and go to your website's home page. Copy the entire address. You will then paste that address into the Bing site submission window.

Great job! That was easy to do, but why stop there? Here are a couple of other things that we recommend that you do to help the search engines crawl and index your website:

  1. Add your site to Google Places. You may need to register, but it is free and will help you get found locally when people conduct local searches.

  2. Create a website XLM site map and upload it to your web hosting server. An XML sitemap will help search engines crawl and index your website.

  3. Add Google Analytics to your website. To find out how many visits your site gets, how long people visit, what pages they visit, how they found your site and where in the world your traffic is coming from, Google Analytics provides the answers and adding it to your website is definitely something you will want to do.

  4. Begin a keyword search plan. Google has a keyword search tool to help you discover keywords that may be used to benefit you in online searches. The tool is easy to use and gives you information about how many times a month the word is searched. Here is a link to a blog that goes into detail about how to begin a keyword search plan:

Following the suggestions above will help you establish awareness of your website on search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo. You will also start to see who is visiting your website by setting up Google Analytics and tracking the data it provides. This is a great way to see how effective your site is. Google and Bing have a lot of tools to help both pros and do-it-yourselfers improve their websites exposure. The tools can be found at:
